Google App Engine: First Impressions

10 04 2008

Google App Engine gives you the possibility to write Web applications and to deploy them on Google servers, so that those applications are very secure, fast, and especially very scalable. Currently it is still in the test phase, but as soon as that application platform will be released, it will probably perform very well.

So is this cool? It is. Laughing

Are there any negative aspects? The programming language used for those Web applications is currently Python, which is ok, but there might be more interesting choices on this planet. However the framework to write such “Google App Engine” applications is not really impressive. It does offer a lot of features but in some kind of old-fashioned way.

If you are used to rapid development platforms like Ruby on Rails or Groovy on Grails (for Java developers a wonderful choice), then Google App Engine is a big, big disappointment, if not to say a disaster.

However, I think that the Google engineers are so good that someday this application platform will offer a good-enough framework for writing applications, and I feel very comfortable that I don’t have to take care of performance or scalability measurements then, at least not as much as today.
